U.N. Warned of Ground Offensive by Mullahs on Iranian Resistance, Iran Zamin News Agency, April 3

In a letter to United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and members of the Security Council, National Council of Resistance President Massoud Rajavi warned today that the mullahs' regime may be on the verge of carrying out a ground offensive or missile attacks, air raids and terrorist assaults on the Iranian Resistance's bases in Iraq, taking advantage of the U.S. State Department's green light and the lies it has disseminated.

A week after the bewildering and unprecedented lies by the U.S. State Department on March 24, the mullahs' regime announced through the editorial of a state-run newspaper: "The US Secretary of State's recent statement confirming the presence of bases belonging to the Mojahedin organization in Iraq, as well as the Baathist regime's logistical and military support for the group can be exploited extensively in the present circumstances to deal with the Iraqi regime as well as the Mojahedin group." (Abrar daily, April 2, 2000)

It added: "The government and the relevant agencies must embark on acts of deterrence and reprisal (against the Mojahedin) which should certainly not be confined geographically to any specific area such as the border regions."

The daily wrote: "Under such circumstances, Iran's recourse to deterrent operations, including direct attacks against Mojahedin bases deep inside Iraqi territory… is bound to enjoy the support of the international community,.."

Mojahedin Say They Expect Attack By Mullahs' Regime, Reuters, April 3

BAGHDAD - The main armed Iranian opposition group, the Mujahideen Khaliq, said on Monday that Iran may be about to launch a ground offensive or some other form of assault on its Iraqi bases.

"The mullahs' regime may be on the verge of carrying out a ground offensive or missile attacks, air raids and terrorist assaults on the Iranian Resistance's bases in Iraq," a statement faxed to Reuters in Baghdad said.

The U.S. accused the Iraqi government on March 24 of wasting money that could have improved the welfare of its people on a military complex near Baghdad for the opposition movement.

The Mujahideen Khalq said it had paid for the base and termed the U.S. accusations propaganda to justify retaining sanctions against Iraq.

"But now the mullahs' regime has taken a step further, speaking brazenly about a ground offensive directed against the Mojahedin deep inside Iraqi territory," the statement said.

Changes Ahead In Iran?, The Georgetowner, March 16

[Excerpts from an article by Pierre Salinger]

… In West now for many years, we all have been hoping for the rise of the moderates in the Islamic Republic of Iran. It all started with the Irangate in 1985. Then, with mullah Rafsanjani's rise to power in 1988. Then, again, with the election of mullah Mohammed Khatami in the summer of 1997 as the president of Iran. Now, with the recent national "elections" in Iran.

All along, we have seemed to underestimate that hard hold of the radical clerics on the actual power structure in that country. It may serve us well to take another good look at the article 110 of the constitution of Islamic Republic of Iran.

Article 110 of the constitution defines the powers and duties of Khamenei's successor Ali Khamenei - the supreme guide….

This earthly being who is considered to be infallible by the present Iranian establishment, including President Mohamed Khatami, who opposed the Arab-Israeli peace process. It is he who leads Iran's aspirations to become a nuclear power and who supports terrorism and export of upheaval to other Muslim countries. It is he who controls the "judicial" system - the Kangaroo courts still in operation - in Iran. It is he who controls the "revolutionary guards," the "bassij" (mobilization forces) -- the thugs who interfere in the daily lives of the Iranian people.

Nothing will change for the better in Iran until the power infrastructure of that fascist system changes.

For 18 years, Iran has been branded by the U.N. Commission on Human Rights as the gross and systematic violator of the rights and freedoms of the Iranian people. Iranian people have a glorious humanitarian history. They are demanding the respect of their rights and freedoms. The United States should take their side and not the side of Mohammed Khatami or Ali Khamenei in Iran.

Throughout the past 21 years, we have always given that regime the benefit of doubt on its mischief. We did it during the hostage crisis in Lebanon. We did it with the Pan Am 103 bombing. We did it with Al Khobar bombing of American military barracks. We did it with the bombing of the Jewish center in Buenos Aires in Argentina. Do we want to continue doing it or do we want to tell those in control of Iran that enough is enough…
