Strikes spreading in Iran

The new wave of strikes in various sectors of the Iranian society, subsequent to the spiraling price increases and the deteriorating economic conditions, particularly since the start of the new Iranian year (March 20), are spreading across the country.

Reports say that on April 8 and 9, workers at Isfahan's Aali brick factory converged on the city's governor's office and staged a strike for the second time in the last four months. The action was in protest to the non-payment of their wages in the last six months.

Previously, the factory's workers had gone on strike on November 29, because they were not paid their salaries and bonuses. Aali factory is two billion rials in debt and unable to pay the workers' wages.

One of the factory's workers committed suicide for not having money to buy food for his family.

In Makou, northwestern Iran, taxi drivers went on strike for the second time in the last few days to protest the rise in petroleum products and low taxi fares. The drivers had stopped working on April 7. Since their demands, including an increase in fares, were not met, they again went on strike on April 9.

The atmosphere in the city is reported tense. The continuing strike by taxi drivers has boosted the morale of the residents. Everyone in town is speaking about the intolerable price hikes.
