Iranian Resistance condemns mullahs' prosecution and banishment of 70-year-old clergyman

News agencies reported that Mr. Ali Tehrani, the 70-year-old Iranian dissident cleric, who left Iran more than a decade ago due to the mullahs' repressive and anti-Islamic conduct, has in recent days been tried and sentenced to 20 years in jail and banishment after having been arrested upon his return to Iran.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran strongly condemns the inhuman treatment of this 70-year-old clergyman by the mullahs' regime. The sentence to imprison and send into exile Mr. Tehrani, whose only offense is to state public opposition to the Khomeini regime, clearly demonstrates the suppressive nature of Tehran's rulers.

Such criminal conduct and sentence against Mr. Tehrani, Khamenei's brother-in-law, further reflects the ever more isolation and vulnerability of the mullahs who are trying to clamp a lid on widespread and growing opposition among younger clerics in seminaries by making an example out of Mr. Tehrani.

The NCR calls on the international community, especially the United Nations General Assembly and Commission on Human Rights and all other human rights organizations to intervene concerning Mr. Tehrani's case and guarantee his well-being and release.
