Protest demonstrations by students and workers spread in Iran

On the evening of Tuesday, March 7, suppressive and intelligence agents of the mullahs' regime attacked the student hostels of Tehran University's School of Medicine. Many students were badly beaten up and were injured, while some students were arrested.

On Thursday, hundreds of students at the Azad University of Shahre Ray in south Tehran staged a protest demonstration outside the university building for the second time this week. In the northwestern city of Zanjan, medical students staged a sit-in on Tuesday to protest against harassment of students by security and intelligence agents. Also on Tuesday, hundreds of students in Shiraz and Semnan staged antigovernment protests.

Workers' protests and strikes have been continuing in different parts on the country. Some 7,000 workers demonstrated outside the Majlis in Tehran on Wednesday, March 8, to condemn the new anti-labor law. In a similar protest in the industrial city of Qazvin, 140 km west of Tehran, workers from different factories demonstrated outside the city's Workers' House.

Workers at Jurab-e Gilan factory in Rasht (northern Iran) demonstrated in protest against the dismissal of workers and non-payment of wages for the past three months.

Hundreds of workers in Khazarkhaz leather factory in Tonekabon (northern Iran) went on strike on the morning of Thursday, March 9, to protest against the management's failure to pay their wages. For the second time this week, the workers blocked the busy Tonekabon-Chalous highway. State Security Forces units were sent to the area to crush the protest and reopen the highway. Fearing the spread of workers' protest, the county's security council held an emergency session.
