Unprecedented rise in violations of human rights in Iran
12 persons executed last week. Total executions announced by regime amounts to 114 for 1996

The state-run newspapers in Iran reported last week on the executions of at least 6 persons in Tehran's Qasr prison, 4 persons in Sari (northern Iran), a lawyer in Tabriz (northwest), and a university professor and Sunni leader in Zahedan (southeast).

The total number of executions announced by the mullahs' regime this year thus amounts to at least 114 persons. Compared to the 50 announced executions for 1995, the total sum in 1996 shows over 200 percent increase although the year has not ended yet. More than half the executions took place in the past three months, indicating an unprecedented escalation in the violations of human rights in Iran. The actual number of executions are much higher, as most of them are carried out secretly.

The mullahs' human rights abuses are not limited to executions. The arrest of writers and journalists, massive purging of the universities under the pretext of Islamization, organizing the Bassij Guards Corps in various cities to exert control and impose pressure on the public, and raiding of residential houses to collect satellite dishes, are but part of this regime's repressive measures in recent weeks. More than anything else, the clampdown shows the regime's instability and its fear of growing popular support for the Iranian Resistance and its President-elect Maryam Rajavi.

The mullahs' terrorist activities abroad also escalated. In 1996 alone, 17 Iranian dissidents were murdered by the regime's terrorists in various countries.

The National Council of Resistance calls on the international community to adopt a decisive measure against this religious, terrorist dictatorship which has trampled upon the fundamental rights of its people, its international obligations and the human rights principles. The NCR urges the UN General Assembly to strongly condemn the Khomeini regime's crimes and refer the subject to the Security Council for the adoption of binding measures, including an international boycott.
