Unprecedented repression amid heightening public support for the Mojahedin in Ilam

The Mojahedin military units' large-scale attacks on January 8 with 82-mm mortars on the headquarters of the Intelligence Directorate, the Revolutionary Guards and the paramilitary Bassij in the city of Ilam (western Iran), and two-day clashes between the Mojahedin and the mullahs' combined military, police and intelligence forces north of Saleh-Abad in Ilam Province on January 11 and 12, have brought about an outpouring of popular support for the Mojahedin in this province. This has alarmed the mullahs to the extent that they have resorted to a series of draconian measures to intimidate the people and maintain control, the Mojahedin Command inside Iran reported.

Last week's clashes, which left behind dozens of casualties among the regime's suppressive agents, created much enthusiasm and excitement among the deprived people of Ilam particularly the youths. Despite stringent security measures, people have been visiting the families of slain Mojahedin in the province to pay their respects and offer sympathy. Three Mojahedin combatants, Reza Hedayat, Khaz'al Zamani and Alireza Eslami, were slain in the clashes.

The mullahs' regime has sharply stepped up the presence of its suppressive forces in Ilam, with numerous Guards, Bassij, State Security Forces and Intelligence Ministry units roaming the different districts and streets of Ilam and preventing any public gathering.

Many young Ilamis have been arrested and there is no information on their fate. The security forces have been pressuring and harassing not only the relatives of the Mojahedin combatants killed in the recent clashes, but also the young people, Resistance supporters, and families of martyrs and political prisoners, barring them from leaving Ilam.

Despite these repressive measures, there were several clashes last week between young people and the mullahs' forces and young Ilamis opened fire on Revolutionary Guards and Intelligence Ministry patrol units.
