The terrorists had hidden in the palm gardens in the area and ambushed the Mojahedin's vehicles as they were driving through. Exchange of fire lasted a few minutes, and the assailants finally fled.
Changiz Hadikhanlou, 45 from Mianeh, East Azerbaijan, was wounded in this clash and subsequently died in hospital.
Mr. Hadikhanlou established contact with the Mojahedin after the 1979 revolution against the shah. He was imprisoned from 1981 to 1985 under the Khomeini regime. He re-joined the Mojahedin and the National Liberation Army in 1987. His father, Amir Houshang Hadikhanlou, was also a political prisoner and was executed in 1988.
In telegrams to the UN Secretary General, and President and members of the UN Security Council, Mr. Massoud Rajavi, President of the National Council of Resistance, said: The time has come for the United Nations to adopt binding and practical measures to counter the mullahs' unbridled terrorism.
Mr. Rajavi recalled that this was the 50th terrorist assault against the Mojahedin and the National Liberation Army of Iran in Iraq since 1993. Changiz Hadikhanlou was the 14th victim of the regime's terrorism since Khatami took office. These crimes reaffirm that the mullahs' religious, terrorist dictatorship lacked any potential for reform, he added.
The mullahs' faltering regime is faced with growing tensions within its ranks and unable to curb the rise in the activities of the Mojahedin and the growing tide of youths who are joining the National Liberation Army. On September 29, it violated the UN Security Council resolution 598 and the no-fly zones and launched air strikes against NLA basecamps in northern and southern Iraq.
The NCR President and Commander in Chief of the National Liberation Army urged the government of Iraq to pursue, arrest and prosecute the terrorists and close down the Khomeini regime's embassy in Baghdad, which acts as the center for planning and perpetrating these terrorist attacks against the Iranian Resistance.
