U.S. State Department's statement emboldens mullahs to continue suppression and export of terrorism

In reaction to the U.S. State Department's statement against the Mojahedin's operations in Tehran, the clerical regime's Foreign Ministry spokesman said yesterday: "The pursuit of terrorists who carry out terrorist operations against our citizens from a neighboring country is the legitimate right of Iran."

A Mojahedin press spokesman said: "The mullahs' Foreign Ministry spokesman's remarks show clearly that the Iranian Resistance was justified in warning that the ruling mullahs would be taking advantage of the State Department's statement against the Iranian Resistance and its "offer of condolences" to the torturers and those responsible for executions in order to launch further terrorist attacks and aggression.

Ironically, the mullahs' regime, characterized by the State Department as "the most active state sponsor of terrorism," is now basing the justification for its terrorism and aggression outside Iran on the State Department's position.

In a telegram yesterday to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and members of the Security Council, Mr. Rajavi warned that the ruling mullahs would be taking advantage of the State Department's position to carry out more terrorist attacks and aggression.

In a speech in Tehran yesterday, ex-President Hashemi Rafsanjani welcomed the State Department's position and said: "Inside our own country, we can sort out the problem of getting rid of mischief-making elements." The Mojahedin spokesman said Rafsanjani's thinly-veiled remarks showed that the ruling mullahs have interpreted the State Department's position as not merely a green light to carry out further terrorist attacks and acts of aggression outside Iran, but also as a go-ahead for more executions and suppression inside Iran.

The mullahs' Foreign Ministry spokesman referred to the extensive support enjoyed by the Iranian Resistance and the Mojahedin among the elected parliamentarians in Europe and the U.S. and attacked Western governments for "allowing the free activities" of Iranian Resistance activists. In an absurd balancing act, the mullahs' official urged these governments to impose restrictions on the activities of Resistance sympathizers.

The U.S. State Department's position has thus not only emboldened the clerical regime to continue its terrorist and repressive policies, but has also given the mullahs a carte blanche to blackmail Western governments.
