Further information on UA 282/97 (MDE 13/37/97, 22 August 1997) Death penalty

IRAN Zoleykhah Kadkhoda (f), aged 20

The Iranian government has not clarified the fate of Zoleykhah Kadkhoda and Amnesty International remains concerned that she may still be at risk of execution.

On 11 August 1997, Zoleykhah Kadkhoda was publicly stoned and subsequently confirmed dead. She revived at the morgue, however and was taken to hospital where her condition is said to be improving.

Media reports suggest that an appeal for clemency has been submitted to the court.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Amnesty International is opposed to the death penalty in all cases as the ultimate violation of the right to life and the right not to be submitted to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Amnesty International believes that an incident such as that described above further illustrates the barbarity of the death penalty. The organization therefore urges the Iranian Government to spare Zoleykhah Kadkhoda from suffering this inhumanity a second time.

FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/faxes/express/airmail letters in French, English or your own language:

- Urging that the death sentence against Zoleykhah Kadkhoda be commuted and the appeal for clemency upheld;
- expressing unconditional opposition to the death penalty in all cases.
